Most Water Authorities treat the domestic water supply with Chlorine or, in some cases, Chloramine in order to make the water safer for human consumption. In addition, chloramine is created when ammonia in the aquarium water is mixed with chlorine.
As all of these chemicals can be lethal to fish, it is important to remove all traces of chlorine and chloramine from any water before it is used to 'top up' or change the water in the aquarium. Without chlorine being present, any residual ammonia in the aquarium cannot be converted into chloramine.
Although chlorine can be removed from domestic water by means of vigorous aeration and agitation, chloramine cannot. Fortunately, several products are available which instantly remove these chemicals from the water before it is added to the aquarium. These products usually also have other beneficial effects such as removing certain harmful metal compounds from the water, stabilizing the pH value and aiding the fish's natural coating to promote the healing of cuts and wounds.
