oscilloscope
This is a picture of the oscilloscope I used to take the waveforms in this guide and the 'How Radio Works' guide.

The controls below the display are to adjust the brightness and focus of the beam and a control to illuminate the 'grid'.

As this is a 'dual beam' oscilloscope, there are two vertical amplifiers but both beams share the same timebase.

The cluster of controls at the top right of the front panel are associated with the timebase and control how it is triggered, whether it is repetitive or 'one-shot' and so on.

I hope you have found this rough guide informative.
